Creating your own scared space
Dear friends
A few days ago I heard a talk on NPR about sacred spaces. The idea was that sacred spaces, though are mostly public and religious, can also be personal and have private spiritual or other meaning.
I was thinking about that talk now that the Jewish New Year and the change of season are approaching. This is a time when I am drawn to connecting with my inner self, with my soul, contemplating my path and creating my life. I find myself spending time and attention on my sacred spaces, mostly the small alters we have in the rooms of our home, and our porch, where we practice yoga, meditate, celebrate, and commune with the small piece of nature which is our back yard.
There is something very soothing in spending time in a space which holds so much of our energy, our connection with the divine, and our intentions for ourselves and for the world. It can be an actual space like our porch, or a small corner like our alters, an imaginary space that we can go to in our mind, a picture of a place…. One of my sacred spaces is a spot under a tree on a hill above the Mediterranean, in the north part of Israel. I close my eyes and put myself there, and immediately feel connected.
I have attached to this message a picture of a place I have never been to, I don’t even know if it exists, but I like the serene image and the beautiful light. It looks like a good place to relax, connect and meditate. If you like it, feel free to make it a sacred space for yourself.
